Recompositions, 2002

Recompositions was inspired by the location, structure and function of Spagetti Junction. First opened on 24th May 1972, Spagetti Junction is known as a comtemporary symbol of Birmingham and as one of the busiest road networks in Europe. Establishing connections with the site, the work takes soundtracks from road movies as its starting point. Films such as 'Paris Texas' and 'Mad Max' were first considered and then, the idea of movement was expanded, and tracks such as 'Europe Endless' by Kraftwerk and other film themes were included. The scores were then transcribed in reverse and arranged for new instrumentation. The process of reversal links the location with the work both conceptually and formally. The new sound piece moves simultaneously forward and backward commenting and reflecting on the function of an architectural structure and its embodiment of symbolic optimism.
