Between July 19th 2000 and July 23rd 2000 I made a trip to Iceland
in order to visit Askja, a remote place in the middle of the
volcanic desert. The work begins with this journey and ends
one year later. On the days between 19th July 2001 and 23rd
July 2001 the same trip was made by someone unknown to me. I
made the arrangements for this second journey, the itinerary
followed my own as closely as possible, same flights, same hotel
rooms, same bus, same stops.
The the unknown traveller responded to an advertisement, gave
their name over a mobile phone line (which was then discontinued)
and collected all of the tickets, bookings and details for the
journey without knowing anything more. It was stated that they
must, as I had, travel alone. I never met the person who made
the trip and they know nothing of the work. They remain a complete
stranger. The images are slides taken on my first trip in 2000
and at Heathrow Arrivals in 2001, at the end of the journey
made by the unknown traveller.
